September 4: Vigo, Spain

Before this cruise I had never even heard of Vigo, Spain. It's a shame because this port town has a ton of character (a different kind than Bruges). When we first got off the ship our group was indecisive so we ended up splitting into two groups. One group went to the holy city of Santiago de Compostela and our group stayed in Vigo. We started off by going to the fish market and at first we just saw a few crates of sardines and other smaller fish.

Then we wandered to another building where the large fish were being sold. The two main fish they were selling were swordfish and some kind of shark. There must have been at least 100 swordfish and 50 sharks on the floor being sold, it was pretty incredible.

After the fish market we headed up to the Parque de Castro and spent about an hour or so looking out over the city.

For lunch we headed back down to a place close to the fish market and I got to try some razor clams and percebes, which are goose neck barnacles. They kinda look like a lizards toe, but they taste incredible. I've said that a lot of fresh seafood, especially shellfish, has tasted like the sea, but they all pale in comparison to percebes. The flavor is briny, and kelpy, with just a hint of oyster flavor and they are actually quite refreshing.
After lunch we just wandered around the city some more and then came back to the boat. All-in-all Vigo was a pleasant surprise.
