June 19/20, 2013: Honolulu to Fukuoka

Day 2 of marriage saw us making our way to Japan to meet Christal’s relatives. We were supposed to leave Honolulu around 10:30 am but instead our plane had a broken fuel pump that needed to be fixed. We ended up being delayed for about three and a half hours. Luckily Auntie Shirley had some extra passes to the United lounge so she, Christal and I went in there during the delay and stocked up on a bunch of goodies.

Other than some turbulence from the typhoon in Japan the plane ride itself was pretty uneventful, but the delay caused us to miss our original flight from Tokyo to Fukuoka so once we finally landed at Narita airport we had to hustle through customs so that we could get out on the last flight to Fukuoka.

Once we landed in Fukuoka Uncle Koji’s brother, Hiro, picked up our luggage and we met him at the hotel. After we had checked in and dropped our stuff off we went out for some food. Across the street from the hotel was a restaurant called Yayoiken. We ordered our food from a vending machine that printed out a ticket and then when we sat at the table the server came and took our ticket to the kitchen. I ended up getting broiled hokke, which is a Japanese white fish. It was a really mild, flaky fish that I would definitely get again.

After we all ate at Yayoiken we went back to the hotel and had some ramen from the little restaurant in the hotel. The noodles in the ramen had great texture, they were firm and chewy, yet still tender and the broth was really light and clean tasting. Once we were finally done eating Christal and her mom went to the onsen in the hotel and I called it a night.
